Scholarships Frequently Asked Questions

 FAQ's

Q. I graduated from university two years ago, where should I lodge my application?

A. You should lodge your application at the Scholarships Office where you are currently enrolled or where you graduated from, (even if you are currently studying overseas). If you have been out of the university system for more than five years then send your application directly to the Scholarships Manager at the New Zealand Vice-Chancellors’ Committee.

Q. The scholarship closes on 1 October which is a Saturday. Is the scholarships office open on Saturdays?

A. No. If the scholarship closes over the weekend, then you will need to get your application in by 5pm the Friday before the scholarship closes.

Q. The scholarship I wanted to apply for closed a week ago, can I still apply?

A. No.

Q. I meet most of the eligibility criteria for the Scholarship but not all of the criteria listed in the regulations. Can I still apply?

A. Probably not. However you should contact the Scholarships Manager of your university (or NZVCC if not currently enrolled) to discuss your case.

Q. I am applying for admission to an overseas university. Do I need to gain a place before I apply for a scholarship to help fund my studies?

A. No. It is best that you apply concurrently for any and all scholarships that you are eligible to apply for. As most NZ students wishing to study overseas, head to the northern hemisphere, the difference in the northern and southern hemisphere academic calendars means that by the time you hear whether you have a place in a UK/US university, the closing date for NZ based scholarships will have passed.

Q. I applied for a scholarship last year, do you still have my application?

A. No. We do not keep unsuccessful applications. If you wish to reapply for any scholarship you will have to complete and submit a new application form.

Q. I applied for a number of NZVCC administered scholarships, which are not co-tenable with each other.  If successful, with more than one, how long do I have to accept/decline them?

A. This depends upon the scholarship. Sometimes you will be asked to accept by a certain date, sometimes you will be expected to accept or decline, immediately.

Q. I am applying for several scholarships at the same time, can I send in just one set of accompanying documentation for all the applications?

A. No. You must submit a complete application for each scholarship. Each scholarship is considered by a separate committee.

Q. I cannot find one of the documents which has to be sent in with my application. Will my application be considered without it?

A. Incomplete applications cannot be considered.

Q. You request that a “certified copy” of my academic records be included with my application. What is a certified copy?

A. A certified copy is a photocopy which has been certified by a solicitor, JP or school principal that it is a true copy of the original. The person certifying the document will also have to sight the original document.

Q. I applied for a scholarship a while back but haven’t heard anything.

A. Following selection of a scholarship, all candidates are advised the outcome of their applications by either post or e-mail. If you havent heard anything yet, the selection process may not yet have been completed.
