The New Zealand Universities Superannuation Scheme was established in 1993 and at 31 December 2007 had 5,651 members. Funds under management at 31 December 2007 were valued at $227 million.
Seven universities are party to the trust deed and there is provision for associated university companies and bodies to join. The Auckland University of Technology is not a participating university.
The NZVCC services quarterly meetings of the scheme's trustees. Ms Penny Fenwick, the Committee's Executive Director, is Secretary to the Trustees. Enquiries about Trustee meetings should be directed to the Associate Secretary Jackie Twist.
University employees who wish to join the scheme or wish to receive details of the provisions of the scheme should contact the superannuation officer in their university. The appropriate person can be located through the Human Resources or Personnel section of the Registry.
The New Zealand Universities Superannuation Scheme is a registered superannuation scheme. As required by law for public sector schemes, it is a defined contribution scheme in which individual accounts are held in the name of each member. Universities will subsidise eligible employees at a rate of 1.35 times a member's contribution up to a maximum of 5% of the members salary. The employer's subsidy vests over 10 years. The employer's contributions are subject to tax.
